Household hazardous waste is banned from Iowa landfills and therefore cannot be placed in regular trash or placed out for pick up on bulk clean up days.
Hazardous waste includes but is not limited to:
- Oil based paint
- Stains
- Varnishes
- Pesticides
- Drain and oven cleaners
- Lawn and pool chemicals
- Aerosol cleaners
- Fluorescent light bulbs
Latex paint is not considered hazardous. Dry out latex paint by putting cat litter or sawdust in the can. Once dried, it can be put in your regular trash.

Annually, the South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency sponsors a free hazardous waste drop-off event. Typically, this event is held every spring and will be featured in the City Newsletter or on the City's website.
