Council Member Harold Van Stryland is serving his third term on the Pella City Council. He began this term in January 2024 but served two terms previously.
Council Member Van Stryland and his wife Elsie moved to Pella in 1978. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Dordt University in education with a major in German and minors in English and history. He was awarded an MA from the University of Washington in Germanic Languages and Literature and has studied at 15 other universities and institutes in the U.S., Germany, London and Mexico. Studies included a variety of different subject areas, but especially Spanish, social studies and business. Those studies, living and working in other countries and traveling to about 50 countries have enabled him to see city and country governments that work and those that don’t. Harold is officially retired but still does some substitute teaching.
Harold’s term expires on December 31, 2027.
Harold (often known as Van) is married to Elsie, and they have two children: Jill Van Stryland Long, who lives in Pella, and Carl Van Stryland, who lives in Sioux Falls. They have 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.
Council Member Van Stryland's goals for Pella include:
Working on low- and moderate-income housing
Keeping Pella's traditional Dutch architecture and Dutch heritage
Using taxpayers' money wisely; making Pella an affordable place to live for low-income residents
Maintaining Pella's services and aging infrastructure
