The following tips can help you stay safe when it comes your electricity:
If you notice that you have a street light out or that is cycling on and off in your area, please notify the Electric Department at 641.628.2581.
If you notice that you have branches growing into an electrical line, please call the Electric Department to have the tree trimmed. Please do not try to do this yourself; a tree limb that is touching a power line can be dangerous.
Please remember that 48 hours before you dig, you need to call Iowa One Call at 800.292.8989 or the nationwide 811 number to have utilities come locate your lines. This is a free service.
Please remember that you should not place plantings around electrical boxes in your yard. Plantings can grow into the box and cause outages. The Electric Department also needs room to work safely and quickly to restore service should there be a problem. Keep shrubs and plantings 10 feet away from the front side of equipment and 2 to 3 feet from all other sides.
The lights don't go out too often, but every now and then storms can shut off the power. If your lights go out, check your circuit breakers and check with your neighbors. If it seems like a power outage, call the Electric Department weekdays from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Use surge protectors for sensitive electronics and computers.
