The Community Services Department is proud to maintain 15 diverse parks and 2 sport complexes for the City of Pella. A map of the City shows where each park is located.

Tulips/Flower Gardens
The Parks Department maintains a total of over 220 flower beds in the City of Pella. This includes 146 street flower beds and over 70 flower beds in parks and at City facilities. We also maintain 44 pots and hanging flower baskets in the Molengracht plaza area.

Each year tulips are planted in the fall and removed in May to be replaced with annual flowers.

For 2019 bloom, just over 120,000 tulip bulbs, in over 70 different varieties, were planted in parks and along the streets. We plant a variety of early, mid and late blooming bulbs to ensure the longest bloom season possible. Bloom time is dependent on weather but in general is mid- to late April through early May.

In May the tulips are replaced with 28,000+ annual flowers and plants, in over 45 varieties, that will provide color into late summer.

Street Flowers Beds in The City's Right-of-Way
As directed by Council, the Parks Department will maintain street flower beds in the right-of-way on the following streets: Washington Street from Broadway to Brinkhoff Park, Franklin Street from Broadway to West Market Park, North Main Street from Washington to the crosswalk at Sunken Gardens, South Main Street from Liberty to 1/2 block south of Peace Street. All other right of way plantings are subject to approval from the Public Works Director and are detailed in Chapter 150 of City Code

Community Gardens
The Community Services Department is excited to offer Community Gardens. This program is designed to bring gardeners, both amateur and experienced, together in a community-based experience. Each participant will be required to sign a Guidelines & Plot Rental Agreement which is intended to inform gardeners of the rules that govern the program and to hold gardeners accountable for their plot and its maintenance. The installation of the gardens was made possible thanks to financial contributions from the Leighton State Bank, Marion County Bank, Pella Business Women Club, and Pella Kiwanis Club. Call 628.4571 for availability.

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for GPS users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capabilities of a GPS unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All visitors are asked to do is leave something for the cache if they get something. Download the Geocache Permit Application.

Shelters in various parks may be reserved anytime during the year, but restroom facilities may be closed from October through April, by submitting the Shelter Rental Form and fee to the Pella Park, 712 Union St., Ste 104, Pella, IA 50219.
